We have received information that the Wisconsin Department of Corrections has allegedly increased the amount of money taken away from women inmates. This means they are taking 50% of the money sent in by family and friends to help the women get their basic needs met such as shampoo, deodorant and other feminine hygiene products from canteen. This also means that a woman making the slave labor wages of 19 cents per hour will now actually only make half of that. Women who are indigent receive a package once a month that never has enough in it to cover needs. This is abuse.
The Department of Corrections says being in prison is for rehabilitation. How is that even possible when this degradation continues? Families that have so little that are trying to support the women are going to have what they can send reduced so that it will be ineffective.
Yes, restitution needs to be paid. But these extreme measures and the fact that some women that have already paid resititution are being double billed for it is unacceptable.
We were also informed by women inmates that meal sizes and caloric intake have also been reduced.
Even inmates have certain basic rights that are protected by the U.S. Constitution including the right to be free of “cruel and unusual punishment” and more.
Civil rights violation here in Wisconsin? Yes.
