Recent data from The WI Department of Corrections shows 211 women are currently serving sentences of 10 years or more and of those 43 are serving life sentences. What types of programs are these women receiving? Especially the women serving the life sentences. The Demeter Foundation will be contacting the women serving life sentences to find out what types of programs and supports they have and what we can possibly do to support them. We are receiving information that these women (lifers) are left to languish and that severe and persistent mental illness becomes part of their sentences. At what point does the rehabilitation end and the warehousing begin? We would appreciate hearing from people who have served a long sentence or family members of women serving these sentences.
